Walking along the riverbed.

Day 136 05.09.12Valencia

City of arts and sciences Valencia, Spain

Despite intending to have a quiet day yesterday we still ended up walking an awful lot and aren’t as refreshed as we’d hoped.  Today we’re making sure we have a more restful day.

Bridge Gargoyle in Valencia, Spain
Sea lions in the sun at L 'Oceanogr√†fic ValenciaWe had a lazy morning then grabbed lunch.  Afterwards we headed out to the riverbed park for a short walk up to the palace of arts.  It’s a pretty glass building that looks somewhat like an overgrown greenhouse!  There’s also a nice fountain in front of it, it wasn’t all on when we saw it but it looks like when they light it up and have it all flowing it would be lovely to watch.  The riverbed park is built on (surprise, surprise) the bed of the old river that was diverted after floods damaged massive parts of the city in the 50s.  The result is a ginormous park that goes on for miles.  It plays home to a skate park, football pitches, a huge kids playground as well as lakes, fountains and statues.  It’s a wonderfully relaxing place to be and a real asset to the city.  After so long in the south where very little grows, to be surrounded by greenery as far as the eye can see is so nice.

Shark swimming over the crowds in the oceanarium, Valencia L' Oceanogr√†ficWe walk back to the van the long way around to check out the local area.  It’s a pleasant surprise to find our favourite Spanish supermarket (Dia) and over the road a launderette – JACKPOT!  It’s a nice area with a friendly, community feel.  After spotting a couple of nice churches and some interesting apartment blocks we head back to the van.  Chris got on with writing some of his book whilst I caught up with blog entries for a little while.
Afterwards we filled up the washing bags and headed back to the launderette.  It was a great price with modern machines (a real rarity here!).  We were joined by a rather odd lady washing her clothes along with a hair-brush and some flip flops?!

Once we were done and stocked up at the supermarket we headed back to the van for dinner and a film.  I’ve added in some pictures that didn’t make the cut over the last few days, I’ve been a bit snap happy of late!
